The chair is a triumph of craftsmanship with a simple design and clean lines. Despite the chair's straightforward appearance it takes more than 100 steps to make one. Amongst other things, the hand-woven seat consists of more than 120 meters of paper cord. Hans J. Wegner designed the Wishbone chair for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1949 and it has been in continuous production since 1950.The oak trees CH uses are somewhere between 150-250 years old. Oak has shorter fibers than ash but is also a very strong wood type. Oak is however easier to work with than ash. It has an open surface and the fibers are visible and touchable even when painted.
The paper cord is treated with a light wax coating prior to weaving in order to make it more resistant to discoloration and grease. You can choose from three different colors: natural and black. The natural color is made from pure, unbleached paper from Swedish forests, and the black is dyed prior to weaving.
The characteristic "Y" provides comfortable back support and stability to the steam-bent top, also inspiring the chair's names; "The Wishbone Chair" or "The Y-Chair".
