The 53 Chair was introduced at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in 1953
and has always been one of Finn Juhl’s most
sought after pieces. This armchair was originally designed for master joiner Niels Vodder.
The 53 Chair is an extravagant piece of furniture and embraces the seated person with genuine comfort.
Finn Juhl’s characteristic design feature of separating the carrying elements from the carried is also at play in the 53 Chair. However,
this time the separation is achieved via more sophisticated means to give the chair a light and elegant expression.
The rear legs, completely free from upholstery, protrude from the floor. In a single, unbroken motion they change direction and
expand into an organically shaped armrest, almost animalistic in nature.

The lounge chair is masterly crafted using solid wood, carefully shaped and positioned to create a unique, organic frame wrapping
around the upholstery as if it is levitating. The delicate transitions from the rounded to the sharp elements enhance the unique
pattern of the wooden grain. Finn Juhl’s artistic approach to design combined with practical and functional needs bring meaning to each
shape and element, such that the chair spoils the user with comfort from a lost time.
The armchair is spacious and naturally extends an invitation to be seated. At the same time, the chair keeps the expression light and
appears beautiful from every angle. As such, the 53 armchair is ideally suited as a freestanding piece for the living room of private homes or
lounge areas in hotels and corporate institutions.

leather and wood.
The Finn Juhl 53 armchair is available in oak or walnut with upholstery in fabric or exclusive leathers.
This chair can be fitted with an extra seat cushion. The entire chair is then always fully upholstered in fabric.
The wood is finished with oil.

ELEGANCE (in black and walnut) is a full-grain aniline leather, 1.2–1.4 mm thick, chrome-tanned, and featuring a natural surface without a protective topcoat. This is a luxurious type
of leather where insect bites, scars, wrinkles, and other natural markings are inherent to the material. Due to its natural appearance, variations in texture and color nuances may occur.
As there is no protective coating, the natural leather reacts to light and air, developing a beautiful patina over time. The leather is sensitive to water and stains;
this contributes to the formation of a natural patina and is part of the material's character.

VEGETAL (in natural) is a full-grain aniline leather sourced from Scandinavian bull hides, 1.2–1.4 mm thick, and vegetable-tanned. The surface is natural and untreated (without a topcoat).
This is a luxurious type of leather where insect bites, scars, wrinkles, and other natural markings are part of its character. Due to its natural appearance, variations in texture
and color nuances may occur. This classic, vegetable-tanned leather develops a beautiful patina over time as it absorbs light and air.
The undyed, vegetable-tanned leather acquires a patina that ranges from a light sand color to cognac. Vegetable-tanned leather is sensitive to water and stains; this contributes to the
natural patina and makes the leather exceptionally luxurious.

Finn Juhl Organic Danish Design

The Danish modernist Finn Juhl may have been the designer with which organic forms are most visible in his furniture design.
Like other modernist pioneers, Juhl started from scratch with no role models or hereditary limitations.
He designed by measuring and analyzing his own body and how the individual parts of the chair should support the human body.
And unlike his contemporaries, with their streamlined, scaffold-like structures, Juhl strove for a more organic,
natural shape.
The potential strength of the wood was used to the maximum, just like it occurs during the natural growth process of a tree.
As Finn Juhl translated his ideas into bold, smooth joinery where every element of the design flows seamlessly into another,
he also set very high standards for the furniture makers who had to make the design.
The result is visible in beautifully refined, sculptural and iconic work that has been supplied exclusively by House of Finn Juhl
since its restart in 2001.
