The Penguin by Architectmade is a timeless example of Danish craftsmanship and characterful minimalism.
Hans Bunde created the penguin in 1954 for each of his daughters, since then the figure become an iconic piece
in the world of Scandinavian design.
Today, Penguin is available in three sizes and continues to charm with its expressive simplicity and warm, natural materials.

Design & Expression

Despite its minimal form, Penguin is unmistakably true to its species.
The hand‑painted black back captures
the silky sheen of real penguin feathers, while the untreated beechwood front represents the bird’s distinctive white belly.
Each figure is crafted from solid beech, making every Penguin unique. Over time, the natural wood grain
will deepen in character, adding even more beauty to the piece.

Wood is a natural, living material. Over time, exposure to sunlight or humidity may cause slight colour changes
as the wood’s moisture content shifts. 

About the designer Hans Bunde

Born in 1919, Hans Bunde was a highly skilled silversmith trained at the renowned Cohr Silver.
Influenced by the celebrated designer Wiwen Nilsson, Bunde became a defining creative force for Cohr in the 1950s.
With Penguin, he brought together his affection for his daughters and his fascination with the elegance of birds.
The figures, large and small, symbolise pride, family bonds, friendship, and love, making them meaningful gifts
as well as enduring design objects.
